Course Format

KU Aerospace online short courses are live, interactive classes. Courses will meet either daily for 3-5 days or 2-4 times per week over several weeks. All live sessions are recorded and made available the following day. Some courses may require you to complete coursework outside of the live class sessions (readings, small assignments, etc.). The amount of time you can expect to spend outside of class combined with the live class meeting hours will not exceed the total classroom/instructional hours listed for the course.

Course Meetings Online via Zoom

All live course sessions will be held via Zoom, which combines video conferencing, online meetings and group chat into one easy-to-use tool that is ideal for online class use. Instructions for how to access the live class Zoom meetings, including links to join, meeting IDs and passcodes, will be provided with the online course materials in Canvas (more below).

Course Materials

Course materials vary by course, but all courses will have materials available via Canvas, the University of Kansas Online Learning Management System. Your Canvas Course will be where you access course outlines, notebooks, readings, videos, resources and recordings of past meetings you may have missed.

Some courses may also have textbooks that need to be purchased separately. Information about any required textbooks is listed on the course registration page. Click on the “Learn more and Register” link for the course to access course materials details.

Canvas Online Course Access

Once you complete your online course registration, you will receive two emails. The first will provide you with your KU Online ID, (example, jg-m756943). The second email will arrive within 5-10 minutes with the subject line "Set Up Your KU Account" and include instructions on completing your account setup, including setting your password. You will log in to Canvas using these credentials.

If you did not receive the email with instructions for setting up your account, please check your spam folder and contact KU IT Customer Service Center helpdesk at itcsc@ku.edu or call 785-864-8080.

Once you are logged in, you will see the course under the “Dashboard” section of your Canvas home screen. Click on the course title to enter the course, and then go to "Modules" on the left-hand navigation menu and click on "First Steps" to learn how to get started and prepare for the course.

NOTE: If you have previously taken a KU course with us using Canvas you will receive a "welcome back" email and you will sign in using your existing KU Online ID and password.

System Requirements

Zoom System Requirements

NOTE: If you are concerned your system may not meet these requirements, we can work with you. Please contact us at ProfessionalPrograms@ku.edu.

KU Aerospace Short Courses online are live and interactive. All students will be expected to participate in discussions and, in some cases, small group activities or assignments in order to fully learn the material being presented.

Video: Use of a web camera during each meeting will be expected in order to provide both students and instructors with an optimal educational experience as well as to facilitate taking attendance for issuing CEUs for the course.

Audio: A headset with a microphone will allow you to hear and be heard more clearly during discussions.

For the best class experience, you are encouraged to download the Zoom Client for Meetings. If you are unable to use the Zoom Client, you will want to connect to Zoom via a Chrome browser, where you will be able to access most (but not all) of Zoom's features utilized in the online course.

Once you register for the course, you need to test your Zoom setup before the first class session – especially your audio and video device settings – at https://zoom.us/test.
