Building Bridges, Saving Lives
Bridging the Gap Africa is a non-profit organization that builds footbridges in rural east Africa for communities of people who are inhibited from getting to schools, clinics and markets because of dangerous floods and wildlife. These bridges save lives and increase quality of life for all communities. This presentation outlines the types of bridges built, the innovations of "bush" bridge building and how you can help or get involved.
Kelley C. Rehm is a licensed professional engineer working as a strategic planning and marketing manager for bridges with CH2M Hill. She has served in the past as the program manager for bridges and structures with the non-profit association AASHTO (America Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), where she worked nationally with all 50 state departments of transportation and their bridge divisions to manage updates to codes and specifications that are federally mandated for use in bridge design, construction and inspection. Kelley has almost 20 years of experience in bridge design, construction and management, working both as a private consultant and, before that, as a bridge design engineer with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Currently she is a member of the board of directors for Bridging the Gap Africa. Kelley is the lead engineer for the organization and the chair of the Technical Advisory Committee. Kelley has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky, as well as a master’s degree in structures, also from the University of Kentucky.
